As I was writing yesterday’s post about the Probable Almost Certain Future, I began to see a lot of parallels between the teachings of The Landmark Forum / The Landmark Advanced Course and the ideas from The Law of Attraction. While Landmark Education makes no references to The Secret or The Law of Attraction, I have heard many people in my seminars make references to The Secret, and I can see many ways in which the ideas from The Landmark Forum are similar to those from The Law of Attraction.

To make a comparison between The Law of Attraction and The Landmark Forum, I will use the example of debt.

The Law of Attraction and The Secret would say that the reason I am unable to get out of debt is because I am always thinking about my debt, and thus sending out signals of “debt” to The Universe. The Universe receives these signals and replies to me by sending me more debt.

In My Landmark Forum and Landmark Advanced Course, their message was that the reason I have been unable to get out of debt is because I am repeatedly living into my Probable Almost Certain Future. I am living an “Act” that bring me more debt, and I am going to continue to live into that Act unless I do something to change it.

The Secret and The Law of Attraction tell you that The Universe is responsible, and that you can change The Universe by changing your thoughts and actions. The Landmark Forum tells you that your Act is responsible and you can change your Probable Almost Certain Future by learning to recognize your Act and to make changes accordingly. Basically they are both saying that you are the one who is responsible, and that without changing your actions you will not bring about any positive change in your life.

I am not an expert on The Law of Attraction, but one thing that I picked up through my learning is the ideas around The Law of Polarity. Basically, The Law of Polarity says that any idea or thought can have an exact polar opposite. When you are using The Law of Attraction, it is important to use The Law of Polarity, and to ensure that you are using positive thoughts to attract things into your life. The example from The Secret says that if you are thinking about “Get out of debt”, that will only keep you in debt. What’s the polar opposite of debt? Financial abundance. So if you really want The Law of Attraction to work in this situation, you need to concentrate on “Financial abundance”, and not focus on “Get out of debt”.

Beyond The Law of Attraction, The Law of Polarity can be applied to many aspects of your life. Much in the way that Positive Sentiment Override can cause you to look at the good side of things, you can use The Law of Polarity to give yourself a generally positive outlook on life.

Here’s an example. I was just browsing MyBlogLog and noticed a user with a name “IWasALoser” (example). Now, while at first this may seem like an empowering name to give yourself, since you are not a loser anymore – really you living in the past (I was a loser) and bringing that past into your present and future. Every time you login with that name, every time you connect with someone and they associate you with that name, you are reminded of the negatives from your past. You might say that you were a loser, but if you really took a minute to think about how that name makes you feel, I bet it isn’t very positive.

If this person was to use The Law of Polarity to come up with a new name, they might end up with “IAmAWinner” or “IAmAmazing” – or something that gives them a positive feeling. These names are much more empowering, and let you live in the present.

Surrounding yourself with positive ideas and positive people will help you to bring more positive things into your life. If you insist on dwelling in the past and remaining attached to your negative ideas, it will be very difficult for you to ever escape them. Try looking around your life and see where you are hanging on to old negative habits or ideas, and try using The Law of Polarity to make a change in your life.

For several years I have been complaining about the state of my finances. I will complain about my lack of money, and then I look around and I am not doing the things that I need to do to bring more money into my life. I haven’t been taking the steps necessary to create financial abundance, yet I somehow expect that I will wake up someday and find my pockets full of money.

Looking from The Law of Attraction, if you want to create financial abundance, you need to act accordingly. Often times I will have a very productive month, where I will bring in a good amount of money. I reach a point where I am about to have a real breakthrough with my finances, but then I look around and think “This isn’t working” – and according to The Secret and The Law of Attraction, The Universe says “Your wish is my command” – and gives me more of the same thing that I’ve always had.

In reality what happens is that I lose my desire to continue working. I have worked hard every day for a month, and I feel like I don’t have anything to show for it, so I give up. Eventually I build up the motivation again, but I’ve lost the momentum that I had during the previous month, so I’ve got to start from the beginning again. Whether you look at it as The Law of Attraction, or my simple action / reaction, you can see how I never really get head above water.

Instead of looking around and complaining about all the things that I don’t have, or all the things that I can’t afford, I need to stay focused on the positives. I need to be thankful for the things that I do have. Yes I really want a laptop, but I am thankful that I have this desktop computer and that I have the luxury of working from home. Yes I really want an iPhone, but I am thankful that I have my current phone and it works for what I need. When I’ve worked hard for a month straight, I need to keep looking ahead and living into my future. Every time that I abandon my goals, I make things harder for myself.

I am at a great place in my life right now. I just moved in to a new apartment with my girlfriend, and I am setup where I can create real financial abundance this month. I will be receiving my deposit check from old apartment, I have plenty of work lined up, and one of my clients has begun referring me for several new projects. I have also found enjoyment in working on this blog and have several ideas for new blogs and projects that I can use to generate passive income for myself. Living in this environment will let me dedicate more time to my work and to my future.

Positive Sentiment Override and Negative Sentiment Override is something that I first read about in the book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. I am currently rereading this book, and when I read about Positive and Negative Sentiment Override this time through, I felt that it could be applied widely to my life.

The idea of Positive and Negative Sentiment Override was developed by John Gottman, an expert in the field of relationships and marital stability. Gottman uses Positive and Negative Sentiment Override to describe the general state of a relationship between two people. If the relationship is largely positive, the relationship is good and is said to be in Positive Sentiment Override. If you are experiencing Positive Sentiment Override with someone, they can do something very annoying or troublesome, yet you will not lash out at them or act negatively towards them. The catch is that in order for a relationship to be in Positive Sentiment Override, positive behaviors need to outweigh negative ones about 20:1.

This reminded me a lot about the idea of “stories”, from The Landmark Forum. The idea is that you have a certain “story” which you associate with a certain person. You think your father is a jerk. Your son is lazy. You think your co-worker is trying to get you fired. No matter what your story is about a certain person, you are always looking for things that prove your story. If they do something that doesn’t match with your story, you just ignore it – but when they do something that does prove your story, you think “I’m right! He is a jerk!” and then continue the cycle.

The same theory applies for a positive story. People who are caught in a positive story about a bad person might stay in an abusive relationship. No matter how they came about to develop their story, they think “He loves me!” and they only look for things that prove this point. If the spouse does something negative, they think “He’s just having a bad day.” – and then when he finally shows up for dinner, they think “See! He does love me!”

I would say that if you are stuck in a negative story about someone, then your relationship with that person is in Negative Sentiment Override. If that someone is a person that is important to you, then this can weigh on your well-being. Most people know what it’s like to be in a relationship with someone that you love, but to have that relationship go poorly. It is a strain on every aspect of your life.

Negative Sentiment Override should be a place that you try to avoid. Negative Sentiment Override costs you a lot (love, well-being, self-esteem) and gives you nothing of value. If you are walking around thinking “He’s such a jerk. I hate him.” – then you are not doing positive things with your energy and you are eroding away your own personal happiness. You are pulling negativity towards your being.

While you might not be able to achieve Positive Sentiment Override with everyone in your life, you should try to go through your life with a general sense of Positive Sentiment Override. We all have to deal with certain people that we may not like, but being in a state of Positive Sentiment Override will help you to deal better with the negative people and things that you encounter. You will be putting out positive energy and the universe will respond to you in a positive way.

I first came across The 100 Day Challenge while surfing videos on YouTube. I found a video by Lilou Mace and I was inspired. The 100 Day Challenge is basically an opportunity for you to put The Law of Attraction into use, and see what you can do with it when you really focus for 100 days.

I invited a few of my friends to join me on this journey and we created a message board. We had a meeting on our first day where we discussed individual goals and we attempted to setup a framework for our intentions. We weren’t going to follow The 100 Day Challenge exactly, but rather create our own version of it. I had a list of 5 intentions, and I was ready to go.

Things went well for the first few weeks, but then I started to lose focus. My group attempted to organize a few meetings, but we were never able to get things to materialize. Right now we are nearing our 100 day mark, and we haven’t met since Day 1. Our message board gets a few posts each day, but they are mostly people sharing their daily schedules.

Throughout the 100 Days I have had cycles where I was having really productive meditations, good work days, focus on my health – and then I would lose focus and lose sight of what my goals were. It was difficult to keep my eye on the prize for 100 Days without a break. Add in the rest of my life, and I feel like I’ve been going non-stop for a very long time now.

While I haven’t exactly met any of my intentions for the 100 Day Challenge, I have gained a lot of ground in different areas of my life.

I am more productive with my work

I have started 2 blogs

I am pursuing new income streams

I am running 3 times per week & exercising

I am reading more often

I will be attending the Landmark Forum this coming weekend

I am moving to a new apartment at the end of this month

It’s pretty crazy when I think about all the stuff that has happened over the last 100 days. I mean, it’s only 100 days – but it is a long time. Basically 1/3 of a year.

Ideally I would like this to become a “Mastermind Group” where we meet every 2 weeks and discuss different things about business, personal growth, etc. We originally started with 6 people, and have basically been reduced to 4 due to inactivity of some members, so we have found a good core and need to add a few more people who can make good contributions to the group.
